S08 Ep09 – Finding Joy in the Valley’s of Life

In Galatians 5:22–23, St Paul names the fruits of the Spirit as the evidence of a life rooted in Christ. Among them, joy stands out as something deeper than mere happiness. In this episode, Stina and Padre explore the difference between joy and happiness, the role of grace and freedom in nurturing joy, and how the fruits of the Spirit grow in our lives. They share stories, practical practices, and examples from Scripture and the saints to remind us that joy is not circumstantial but flows from a life anchored in God—even in suffering.

  • Joy vs Happiness – Happiness depends on circumstances and fleeting feelings, but joy is a deeper state of being, rooted in God and unshaken by external challenges. Recognising this difference helps us cultivate lasting joy instead of chasing momentary highs.
  • Grace and Freedom – True joy flows from grace, which doesn’t override our free will but invites us into cooperation with God. As Augustine reminds us, God saves with our cooperation, and this partnership produces joy even in difficult seasons.
  • Practices to Nurture the Fruits of the Spirit – Daily prayer, gratitude journaling, mindfulness, and the Ignatian examen help us cultivate spiritual fruit. Setting aside a home prayer space and choosing positive focus transforms our hearts into fertile soil for joy.
  • Joy Amidst Suffering – Joy isn’t absent in trials. Like the martyrs or the three men in the fiery furnace, Christians can discover joy even in the darkest valleys by uniting their suffering with Christ and offering it for others.
  • The Joy of the Gospel – Pope Francis reminds us that joy springs from knowing we are infinitely loved by God. This joy overflows into mission, evangelisation, and service, making them truly Christ-like.
  • Joy Across Seasons of Life – From milestones of happiness like graduations and weddings to times of grief and exhaustion, joy remains constant. Saints like Mother Teresa show us that joy can flourish even in a life of hardship and sacrifice.

  1. When have I confused happiness with joy in my own life?
  2. How do I cooperate with God’s grace in daily decisions?
  3. In what ways can I cultivate gratitude and mindfulness to produce better fruit?
  4. Where is God inviting me to find joy even in the midst of suffering?

  1. Create a prayer space in your home with reminders of God’s presence and intentions for prayer.
  2. Keep a gratitude journal to shift your focus toward God’s goodness each day.
  3. Practice the Ignatian examen regularly to grow in joy through gratitude, mercy, and hope.
