What are charisms, and how do we discern the spiritual gifts God has given us? In this episode of Living Fullness, Stina and Padre explore the purpose of charisms — gifts given by God not for personal status or self-promotion, but for the service and upbuilding of the Church.

Together they unpack how charisms differ from personality traits or talents, why no spiritual gift is “better” than another, and how discernment requires humility, love, and openness to God’s direction. They also discuss the dangers of envy, comparison, and boxing ourselves into rigid identities, while encouraging listeners to actively steward the gifts God has entrusted to them.

This conversation is a practical and encouraging invitation to discern where God is calling you to serve, how your gifts may already be bearing fruit, and how the Holy Spirit uniquely works through every member of the Body of Christ.

  • A charism is a spiritual gift given through baptism for the service of others and the building up of the Church.
  • Charisms are not ultimately for self-fulfilment or ego, but for mission and love.
  • Different gifts require different levels of discernment and accountability within the Church community.
  • Some gifts are more visible than others, but no charism is more valuable than another.
  • Hospitality, administration, teaching, healing, encouragement and leadership all matter deeply in the life of the Church.
  • Different seasons and situations call for different gifts to become more relevant.
  • Discernment is important, but we shouldn’t reduce ourselves to a fixed label of “my gifts.”
  • God may call us into roles outside our comfort zone for a season.
  • At the same time, we shouldn’t ignore the natural inclinations and strengths God has given us.
  • Spiritual gifts without charity become hollow and dangerous.
  • Authentic charisms always lead to greater love of God and neighbour.
  • One of the key markers of healthy ministry is the fruit of love being present.
  • Both clergy and laity need to create room for people to trial, discern, and develop their gifts.
  • Not every attempt at ministry will bear immediate fruit, but even failed attempts can produce growth and wisdom.
  • Discernment requires patience, encouragement, and the willingness to allow people to learn.
  • It’s good to admire the gifts in others, but comparison can easily become envy.
  • Gratitude for our own gifts helps us resist resentment and discouragement.
  • God has entrusted each person with gifts for a particular purpose and mission.
  • What makes me come alive?
  • What feels natural to me but difficult for others?
  • What gifts do trusted people consistently notice in me?
  • Where do I see fruit and life flowing from my service?

Spiritual direction, prayer, community feedback, and experimentation all play an important role in discernment.

  1. What activities or forms of service make me feel most alive and connected to God?
  2. Am I grateful for the gifts God has given me, or do I spend more time comparing myself to others?
  3. Where might God be inviting me to step forward in service within my parish, family, or community?
  • Spend time in prayer asking God: “What gifts have you entrusted to me for the service of others?”
  • Ask trusted people in your life what strengths or gifts they consistently see in you.
  • Try serving in a new area of ministry or community life without needing immediate success.
  • Practice encouraging the gifts you see in others instead of comparing yourself to them.
